Legacy Telescope Models

The Library Telescope Program concept primarily was built through the hard work and dedication of volunteers.

Legacy Model Telescopes

The Library Telescope Program was built on the success of the Orion StarBlast and Zhumell Z114 tabletop telescopes. Through the hard work and creativity of volunteers, these telescopes were often modified to improve durability, simplify operation, and make them more patron-friendly for public lending. The lessons learned from deploying hundreds of these telescopes helped establish many of the design principles used in library telescope programs today.

Although the Orion StarBlast (pre-2023) and Zhumell Z114 are no longer manufactured, they continue to serve many communities successfully. These models can occasionally be found through closeout inventories, surplus equipment, or the used telescope market.

The Orion StarBlast was redesigned in 2023.  The redesigned model can be purchased on the High Point Scientific website. However, this telescope is not recommended for use in the Library Telescope Program due to a lower quality design.

In the menu areas provided on this page, we provide the following: Legacy resources for upgrading the Orion Starblast and Zhumell Z114 telescopes. These include modification procedures, decals, etc. A selection of 3D STL files for repairing and/or upgrading legacy telescopes. 3D STL files can be found under the "Parts" menu areas.

Our Goal

The Library Telescope Program™ empowers libraries to spark curiosity, expand access to astronomy, and foster community engagement through hands-on telescope lending – putting the stars within reach for all.
