Launch Library Telescope Program

Launching a Library Telescope Program has never been easier!

Overview

Initiated in 2008 by the New Hampshire Astronomical Society, the Library Telescope Program has expanded to over 1,000 libraries in multiple countries, including the USA, Canada, and various parts of Europe (view our world map).

A successful library telescope program involves more than just purchasing equipment. It requires well-established procedures, comprehensive staff and patron training, effective promotion, and an effective maintenance program to keep the telescopes in good working condition.

To help you get started, we've outlined guidelines for you to consider. We suggest that you read the guidelines in their entirety before launching your program. While adjustments to the guidelines may be needed to fit your library’s unique circumstances, be careful not to stray too far from the methods developed through years of trial and error.

Our Goal

The Library Telescope Program fosters scientific literacy, stimulates interest in astronomy, and offers the awe and excitement of exploring the night sky to those who may have never looked through a telescope.
